If you have a couple of smaller MIDI interfaces already, MIDIOx can do some pretty slick routing & mapping stuff between multiple different interfaces and it's free if you want to tinker. I would Google the interface and OS and look for forum results for definitive answers Were you already aware of these and wanted more of an actual patchbay with the physical patching? I wouldn't mind seeing one eitherīe very aware that if you decide to go with an used interface, legacy devices do not have guaranteed driver support with the latest OS' and you'll be limited to the internal preset routing configs if so. Nothing comes to mind with multiple dins on the front other than one or two pairs so you may have to flip the rack ears around. The only experience I have is with MOTU products, but other brands certainly exist. Though not exactly like a pathbay in terms of the physical patching, it's done through software. You probably need to rephrase your keywords to MIDI interface and you'll get some more results. Thanks!ĮDIT: Wow, so many amazingly helpful responses. I'm a little new to interfacing a larger MIDI studio so please let me know if there's a simpler solution I'm not realizing. But this feels overkill and honestly I only need like 6 ports tops. Has it never existed?! So then I guess I build my own using parts such as this panel + these connectors acting as feed-thru, basically extending the rear ports to the front of a rack. I'd imagine something like an XLR rack patchbay but I could find no such thing online. And sometimes to connect different racks together. So I was googling everywhere for a MIDI Patchbay and all I was able to find was patchbay software.īasically I'm just looking for a rack panel or box with front-facing 5-pin midi ports to easily connect gear to the backside of my rack units. THE EXPRESS XT NOW INCLUDES: Support for 23.976 time code Updated ClockWorks software. However sometimes I like to pop out a different hardware keyboard or drum machine and have the connectivity to midi when I want, but while being able to put the keyboard away easily and keep a clean space. 8-in/8-out MIDI interface, patchbay, and merger with time code sync. If that's the case you might want to do channel routing, so each keyboard only sees data meant for it.I'm in a small space so over time I've collected my fair share of rackmount synths, samplers, and effects units that utilize midi. Second, if you record after touch or a lot of continuous controllers some older devices may glitch on a very busy midi stream, even if most of the data is not for it. If you just want everything to go to everything, you could in port 1, then step out port 1 through 8 changing no to yes on each, then in port 2 and do the same, and so on, the only problem there is if your keyboards are plugged both ways (in and out) and on the same port number, you wouldn't want to rout 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc, because that loop means when you play the keyboard, it makes an internal sound, and sends midi to itself to make the same sound which can cause loss of polyphony, or audible glitches. I saved my presets using the computer, so I'm not positive of that last bit.Įdit: let me add a couple of things. Fourth knob to select the preset number you want to save it to, then yes/no to save. Once names, scroll the first knob all the way back to "base setup #". Im not positive on saving the patch, but I think you turn the first knob to "base setup name", the second knob to select the character, then the fourth knob to change the letter. These four settings mean that anything played by the sequencer will play the 4 keyboards (since this isn't channel routing, it's just like a bunch of midi thru ports, you'll have to keep each keyboard on a different midi channel, and not in omni mode.) These mean anything played on the 4 keyboards will sho up at the sequencer (for recording). So if your sequencer is on port 8 (both in and out) and you have 4 keyboards on 1,2,3,4, then you would want something like: Turn knobs 3 and 4 to select the in and out cables, the last character of the second line will tell you if the selected in and out are routed together (y) or not (n). Turn knob 2 one click, and the top line should say "route by cables" (you can also route by channel but that is much more complicated) Abruzzi my paisan, what do I want to patch? input 1 to output 1? input 2 to output 2? My mpc is connected to output 8 on the front.Mines an AV, so I don't know if yours has the same menu structure, but you work the knobs left to right:
